anthony and leila shelton are his father and step-mom, and camilla accardi and stephen cooper are his mom and step-dad. his father owns a business while his step mom is a baker and his mom teaches despite him wanting her to retire while his step dad is an accountant. his mom was always the more nurturing parent and he's very close with her while his dad was stern and they often were at odds. His dad was usually the one pushing him to the limits and he tributes that to part of his success now.

Do you have any siblings? What are/were they like?

he has four brothers sergio, shiloh, milo and zion and four sisters shy, sienna, sierra and sky. they're all very close even though they get on each other's nerves but through their parents trials and tribulations they were all they had.

Where do you live now, and with whom? Describe the place and the person/people.

he lives in los angeles whenever he's not playing basketball in a mansion with 7 bedrooms and 9 bathrooms, an indoor basketball court, pool, 6 car garage, home theater and gym with a sauna. he also has a home in boston massachusetts with 5 bedrooms, 5.5 baths, indoor heated pool, basketball court, gym, and 3 car garage. he lives with his dog pluto and occasional sibling from time to time.

he's a professional basketball player.

How would you describe your childhood in general?

his childhood was busy and full of work. when his parents were together they were always working to provide for the family so he spent a lot of time with his grandparents working on their farm. his uncle used to rescue him and take him to the local courts or gym to play basketball. if he wasn't doing that, him and his siblings were always together, hanging out and just keeping themselves occupied. once his parents divorced his was bouncing back and forth but got away from the farm life to focus on basketball.

What is your earliest memory?

his earliest memory was getting his childhood dog that he and his siblings begged for.

How much schooling have you had?

he never finished college because he declared for the draft so he only has a high school diploma.

Did you enjoy school?

he did not enjoy school at all, was always tired because of basketball and if it wasn't for basketball he wouldn't have been motivated to do well.

Where did you learn most of your skills and other abilities?

he learned a lot from his uncle he took him under his wing and coached him once he saw the potential in basketball.

While growing up, did you have any role models? If so, describe them.

he looked up to a lot of basketball players like kobe, michael jordan, lebron, and tracy mcgrady.

While growing up, how did you get along with the other members of your family?

he and his siblings were very close knit, did everything together if they could and were always around each other even when their parents separated. overall they were very family oriented and made sure to make time for each other. whether his mom was cussing them out in italian or his dad was being standoffish, they always found a way to show love.

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

he always wanted to be a basketball player.

As a child, what were your favorite activities?

he liked to play basketball but he also enjoyed just spending time with his mom in the kitchen making homemade pasta noodles.

he was a wild child and very high energy, always getting into anything he could and bugging the rest of his siblings. but even though he was one of the middle children he took on a protector role early and always looked out for his sisters especially.

he was social and always had a lot of friends. playing basketball brought him a lot of friendships and attention so he always had a crew of people.

his first kiss was when he was six with a neighbor after his brothers dared him.

no, he lost his virginity at 14 while they were away at a basketball tournament. he swore he loved the girl and everything.

Stonewall Prep is excited to bring you this year's summer trip: Venice Italy! There will be plenty of excursions and things to do, as well as down time to explore everything Venice has to offer. We will be leaving August 1, and returning to the school on August 11.

This trip is not optional. All students and staff will attend, as well as townspeople coming along to assist with supervision.

RULES.

Everyone must be in their assigned rooms between the hours of 11pm and 6am.

No student is allowed to leave the hotel alone - they must have another student or staff person with them at all times.

Excursions and scheduled events are not optional.

Remember you will be in the 'real world' so be mindful of appropriate attitudes and respect with higher marks

Enough time had passed that Sokol was convinced he was more sweat than man. His face was a sticky, slippery mess - his thighs stuck to the plastic chair in a way that had his skin pulling away from it with an obnoxious, slick peeling sound every time he stood to shovel more ice in his mouth from the freezer.

Wolf had not yet given up on demanding Bain fix their problem. Sokol watched with heavy-lidded, sweat-stung eyes as the Swede moved from corner to corner, doing everything from swearing to begging to shaking his bare arse from time-to-time in what he hoped was a location of a spycam.

They both still had their underwear on - they weren’t completely desperate - but Wolf had taken to peeling the sodden fabric down and exposing himself in the hopes of - what, exactly? - intimidating Bain into helping? - annoying him into helping? - when the sound of car tyres crunching over gravel sounded outside, and someone walked into the safehouse.

“Anyone home? - urgh, god, it’s disgusting in here... ”

It was Dallas. Neither Sokol nor Wolf had the energy to cover themselves, or otherwise make themselves modest, as the Mastermind climbed the stairs.

“Hey, why the fuck is the A/C - ” Dallas’ words cut off, mouth falling open as he beheld two of his crewmates practically naked. He fumbled, nearly dropping the bag of groceries he’d been carrying. He stood speechless and unmoving at the top of the stairs as he took in the sweat-slick, pink-cheeked appearance of his team and wondered whether they’d lost the plot.

Sokol made a slow and lazy gesture with his hands.

“Welcome to Sokol’s sauna. Glad to have you join us.”

Dallas blinked at him, looked at Wolf, then blinked again.

“Errr-”

“Air con’s broken,” Wolf supplied, walking to another corner and pulling his boxers down in the hope of ‘mooning’ a spycam, “and for some fucking reason, Bain hasn’t been-”

E' una rottura di palle, onestamente, però ci libera dal gas, per dirne una, visti anche i prezzi e le merdate di questi giorni. Ne ho parlato ieri recuperatevi il post. Poi il riscaldamento a legna ha i suoi vantaggi, è autonomo a differenza di quello centralizzato che è ampiamente diffuso sia nei casermoni costruiti dai russi sia nella case post URSS che ha un enorme svantaggio non lo puoi regolare, ricordo che vivevamo in un appartamento in un casermone e d'inverno stavamo in maglietta perché sparavano il riscaldamento a palla. Uno però degli svantaggi è che bisogna andare fuori a prendere la legna, non nel bosco 😁, ma nel casotto del legno, si è a 5m dalla casa, ma spesso devo fare 5/6/7 viaggi per prenderne per un paio di giorni. Poi c'è il tempo che si perde ad accendere i forni, 3 sotto, uno sopra ma a quello pensano i ragazzi.

What Effects Does a Conventional Wet Sauna Have on Heart Health?

In June 2023, a group of Finland’s most notorious neo-Nazis and a few of their international friends ventured to a lakeside cabin resort set against picturesque woodlands some 120 kilometres north of Helsinki.

They called the gathering ‘White Boy Summer Fest’ after an internet meme co-opted by far-right extremists.  Bellingcat first investigated the phenomenon in 2021. Run by a far-right cultural collective and combat sports group, the event was first held last year, and organisers have indicated plans to make White Boy Summer Fest (WBS) an annual affair.

Over two days, attendees watched far-right bands perform, participated in combat sports, and mingled with other hate group members in hot tubs. Observers warn that neo-Nazi networks — including international ones like the Hammerskins, whose members attended WBS — use events like these to network, radicalise each other, recruit new members and raise money. 

Organisers have successfully kept the locations of the 2022 and 2023 WBS events hidden from the public — until now. Thanks to Bellingcat’s Global Authentication Project (GAP) and burgeoning Discord community, we geolocated both events to rural accommodations belonging to Evo Nature Ltd, a hospitality company in southern Finland. According to its website, Evo has properties in 15 locations between Helsinki and Tampere and received approximately 30,000 customers in 2019.

When asked about the booking, Evo owner Kaj Järvinen told Bellingcat he had no knowledge of the events held by WBS and emphasised that his properties receive a large number of bookings each year.

“I have no clue whatsoever about these type of events. We have around 20 large rental properties. We receive more than 5,000 offer requests and around 1,000 group bookings on a yearly basis, and we do not ‘screen’ our customers if there are no obvious reasons visible.”

There is no suggestion that Evo broke any laws in renting out the property. Neo-Nazi groups in Finland have previously rented for-hire venues without the owner’s knowledge: for example a concert earlier this year was organised by the Jyväskylä branch of far-right network Blood and Honor at a leftist social club near the centre of the city.

In-person venues are nevertheless crucial to the neo-Nazi scene and related subcultures: Europol, the European Union (EU) law enforcement agency, noted they “place high value on physical meetings and group activities” in a report earlier this year.

The 2023 edition of WBS kicked off the evening of Friday, June 16. As photos posted by organisers on social media make clear, the spectacle was anything but subtle. Four Finnish neo-Nazi bands performed sets on a stage in a log cabin while flanked by two swastika banners. Some band members sported Nazi patches and symbols on their clothes and instruments.

In a video taken inside the cabin and posted by organisers, a flag of the international neo-Nazi network Blood & Honour hangs on a wall by the stage. As Bellingcat discussed in our investigation of European Fight Night in Hungary, Blood and Honour is banned in several European countries, including Germany and Spain. They were also listed as a terrorist organisation by the Canadian government in 2019.

Meanwhile, members of the domestic neo-Nazi group Crew 38 Finland attended WBS, according to their Telegram channel. 

According to a report earlier this year by Finland’s public broadcaster, police documents suggest five men arrested in 2021 over suspicion of planning terrorist attacks were significantly influenced by Crew 38 Finland, and met frequently with some of its members. 

Crew 38 Finland are also an affiliate of the international Hammerskins network. Founded in the late 1980s in Dallas, Texas, the Hammerskins are described as “the most violent and best-organised neo-Nazi skinhead group in the United States,” by the US-based Anti-Defamation League (ADL).

Nicolas Potter, a researcher at the Amadeu Antonio Foundation, a German NGO which works to combat racism and far-right extremism, warned EU policymakers in an address to the Council of Europe earlier this year that “classic neo-Nazi networks from the Hammerskins to Blood & Honour continue to forge international alliances,” adding “far-right rock festivals and Mixed Martial Arts tournaments serve as spaces of radicalisation, recruitment and fundraising.”

The weekend of events was about more than just music; participants could sit in the sauna, get a tattoo and buy clothes from extremist brands (some of which feature in our 2022 investigation of far-right fashion).

They could also watch a series of combat sports fights put on by Veren Laki (‘Law of Blood’), one of the event’s co-organisers. According to Tommi Kotonen, an expert on far-right extremism in Finland, Veren Laki is linked to the Finnish branch of the neo-Nazi Nordic Resistance Movement (Finnish acronym PVL). The country’s highest court issued a temporary ban against the group in 2019 due to its spreading of hate speech and use of violence.

Veren Laki is linked to other similar groups internationally that focus on combat sports and training for physical confrontation. According to the organisation’s Telegram channel, a fighter from Veren Laki fought at the far-right combat sports event European Fight Night in Hungary in May 2023. At WBS 2023, photos show several fighters wearing equipment from Pride France, a brand run by French neo-Nazi Tomasz Szkatulski. Currently based in Sofia, Bulgaria, Szkatulski posted on his Telegram channel that he was banned from entering Germany for ten years in July 2023.

The fights outside were followed by another indoor concert. Four bands, including two from Italy, took to the now swastika-free stage to play. Green Arrows, an Italian band popular across Europe’s far-right extremist music scenes, headlined. Green Arrows has publicly declared their support for Italy’s neo-fascist CasaPound movement — the movement’s flag adorned the stage during their set.

But where exactly did all of this take place? Upon seeing photos and video of the event, one of Bellingcat’s volunteers who is based in Finland thought the location looked familiar and began to investigate.

Suspecting it was one of a series of rentable rural cottages in the southern Finnish Lakeland, he soon found a possible venue location on Google Maps.

Open source techniques confirmed his suspicion. He later realised he had been to the location as part of a routine work retreat. A comparison of photos and a video shared by WBS organisers with images of the property posted on Evo’s website confirmed the location of WBS 2023 — a log cabin in the Hämeenlinna region described as an “atmospheric event space” with a small stage and room for 100 people. The barn is part of a seven-acre rental complex with villa apartments, three hot tubs and a lakeside sauna. The site, which is advertised for corporate retreats and family holidays, is approximately a two-hour drive from Finland’s capital, Helsinki, and 90 minutes from Tampere, Finland’s second-largest urban area. Photos of the venue from the owner’s website showed a room whose wooden beams match those seen in photos of a musical performance during WBS 2023.

Furthermore, the pattern observed on a wooden beam as well as the gaps in the wood of the log cabin matches photos of the cabin on the accommodation website with those in a photo posted by WBS participants.

But what about the previous year’s “festivities” at WBS 2022?

One of the organisers’  Telegram channels outlined to attendees that the 2023 location wasn’t the same as in 2022, but “about a 15-minute drive from last year’s location.” 

Searching for similar rentable rural venues in the vicinity of the 2023 event, Bellingcat found the location of the 2022 event — a small villa of red-sided cabins owned by the same hospitality company.

While WBS organisers have announced plans for a 2024 edition, it is unclear if a venue has been chosen. One thing is clear: the value of gatherings like these to the far-right organisations.

Not only do they provide groups a chance to share and promote their ideology, the Financial Action Task Force, the Paris-based global money-laundering watchdog, said in a 2021 report that “most of the funding for extreme right-wing groups appears to come from licit sources” including concert organising and merchandise sales.

Roope Hintz: on skating, style and growing up

So, the episode of the Finnish podcast Total NHL Forever with Roope Hintz was full of so much pure gold that I want to share some of it here. The episode came out on Tuesday 15 February, 2022.

This is a big chunk of text, sorry for that, but if you're interested - here you are:

Roope is from Nokia, the neighbouring town of Tampere. He started his actual hockey career in Tampere, playing for Ilves. (Yes, Nokia is also the home of the rubber products (boots and tyres) factory that later became an international tech giant and is now the name sponsor of the new hockey arena in the bigger Tampere.)

He got a big boost for his skating when he played in Florida for a team called Tampa Bay Juniors in EMJHL in 2012-2013, after junior high school (yläaste), at approx. 16 years of age.

"I wasn't a great skater when I was a kid, but I went to Florida to play hockey, and we had a Russian lady who coached some of us in skating 3 or 4 times a week, teaching us skating technique. The level of the game in the league wasn't too high, I don't know what Finnish league to compare it with, but it was good to get out there, see the world a little, learn the language, and the skating coach helped me develop a lot. I shared an apartment with a couple of players and attended online classes, and I had an English tutor a couple of times a week."

Ilves Tampere was his junior team growing up, and he played a little over one season for them in the men's Liiga team before moving to Helsinki to play for HIFK in 2015, after his NHL draft.

"I wanted to challenge myself in a bigger organization, and a lot of players have moved on to the NHL from there. Also, I got to live on my own, move away from home. HIFK has the reputation that you grow from boy to man on that team, and I thought that it is a challenge that I want to take. The finances [Ilves was near-bankrupt at that point in time] had nothing to do with it. I made the decision based on where I thought I would personally develop best and what would be the best next step for me. I had great mentors there, Juhamatti Aaltonen and Siim Liivik for example. "The team spirit was great from the start. We all knew each other, we had been on the same path [the youth NT development program] from very young, and it all peaked in the home tournament, and we got the brightest medal, it was amazing. The fan thing after that was so huge, we'd be asked for pics and autographs everywhere after that, got recognized on the streets even though we were only the junior team. But you learned interacting with fans there, it's just a thing that you do, take the pics, sign the autograph, and go on to do the thing you're there to do."

"I have some kind of contact with everyone from that team basically, and of course with some the contact is more frequent. When we play each other, we'll at least meet up after the game. Lately we haven't had the chance to go to dinner because of the corona situation, but that's what we usually do."

"We see the game similarly. We all are like, when you pass to the other guy, you know there's a chance you'll get the puck back. I try to use my speed to our advance, and Pavelski is a magical goalscorer, he is one of the best close to the goal in the whole league. And Robertson, he's not necessarily the fastest guy on the ice, but when the computer he has starts to run, his game IQ is just ridiculous. When I know that he has the puck, and find the space for us, I know that he will find his way there.

Pavelski is special.

"He's easily the best golfer on our team, and his hand-eye coordination is amazing with the puck. He practices his shots every morning. I have noticed that his will to win is outstanding. When the stakes are high, there is a big game or a clutch moment, he has the ability to play his best game right at that moment. He can do things that not everyone can. He's not too over-the-top pump you up hype guy, but he will say "we're doing fine, let's just keep going." I'd say he's the biggest leader of our team, in the locker room and on the ice.

Who leads the Finnish Mafia?

"Miro on the ice, in the locker room we Finns are not the loudest. When we're just Finns? I don't know, maybe Esa, he's been here the longest, but we stand our ground against him pretty well when we need to. It's unique to have 5 finns on the team. When I was in the AHL team, I was the only Finn. It's great to be able to communicate on your own language, and we are all alike and like the same things, we like hanging out together. We all except Esa live in the same building, Esa has his house a little further away."

The hardest D-men to play against: Makar, Hedman, Josi. The hardest Finns to play against: Last year it was Hakanpää.

The most stylish player in the NHL [when it comes to their game I think]: Patrick Kane and Panarin.

"Panarin is always a threat when he has the puck. He can pace and control the game, and he's pretty skilled too."

About style and fashion off the ice:

"Style is important to me. I like to wear clothes that not everyone has, I pay attention to that kind of stuff. I have been like that ever since a kid, I have always paid attention to my outfits. We have to wear suits on game days. The dress code was looser last season but now it's suits again. I think it should be the same as in the NBA, you can choose what to wear. I liked last year, you could choose more freely and express yourself with your clothes a bit."

"You've got to love how Pate (Patrik Laine) comes to the arena in his yellow glasses and different hats. Pate is who he is, he's himself, he doesn't ask what other people think."

"Older players like it too, that younger players dress differently and show personality. Out of older players, Radulov is really stylish. When he puts his teeth back in his mouth after the game, he's a totally different looking guy."

Sepe's Backyard Spa

Sepe denies the cameras his athletic body* because he doesn't like to go to sauna or the hot tub before game days (*their words not mine)

Seth was very punctual, If Sebastian said they'd leave at 9 am he'd be ready and waiting for the ride at the bottom of the stairs 8:59

Seth was a little wary about the sauna the first time, "He crouched down when I and Teuvo kept throwing water on the heater, is this normal, but he got a hang of it soon and started suggesting it himself, would it be a sauna night this evening."

"He became a half Finn, I wouldn't be surprised if he moved to Finland after he retires."

Says that there is a lot of leadership in the team, many guys are hard workers but cool and fun off the ice

Doesn't remember what he says to opposing players on the ice, "some curse words can be exchanged in a heated game"

The stuff stays on the ice, the hothead guys aren't the same outside the game. "Tom Wilson is a good example, he plays rough and sometimes testing the rules, but we were teammates at the All-Star game and he was an awesome guy."

Gardacqua - Garda: corsi per gestanti... e per diventare maestri di sauna

Gardacqua, a Garda, sulla sponda veronese del lago, è un punto di riferimento non solo per chi vuol rilassarsi e fare sport in una zona bellissima d'Italia. Quando conobbe Pamela Churchill, Gianni Agnelli frequentava gia da tempo la Riviera, dove affittava una delle ville piu sfarzose, lo Chateau de la Garoupe, ventotto stanze tra le quali un salotto, una sala da musica, un giardino d’inverno e cinque camere per gli ospiti al solo primo piano. In aggiunta c’erano una sala da biliardo, che dava sulla terrazza affacciata sul golfo di Antibes, una piscina, una sauna e piu tardi il campo da tennis. Il giardino con un accesso diretto al mare garantiva la privacy degli abitanti.

In anni in cui intere abitazioni nella natia Torino erano ancora ridotte a scheletri dopo i bombardamenti, Gianni poteva contare su una rendita di seicento milioni annui e aveva un aereo privato.

Tra Gianni e Pamela l’alchimia fu immediata. Lui era affabile, alla mano e divertente. Pamela aveva un corpo sensuale, era navigata e flirtava con lui con una schiettezza che Gianni

trovava piacevolmente inusuale. Qualche giorno dopo, lui le disse che stava partendo per Capri con Raimondo a bordo del Tomahawk e la invito a unirsi a loro.

All’arrivo a Capri, Gianni e Pamela si fermarono a casa del conte Rudy Crespi, un amico di Agnelli, che offri loro ospitalita – ovviamente in camere separate. Una mattina, andando a bere il caffe in camera di Gianni, il conte lo trovo nudo, come gli capitava spesso in privato.

«Voglio che tu conosca Pam, sono pazzo di lei!» gli disse Gianni.

Pamela entro nella camera, anche lei completamente nuda, e si sedette a gambe incrociate sul letto, fissando il conte dritto negli occhi.

Fu l’inizio della loro storia. Gianni prese due appartamenti adiacenti a Parigi e Pamela trascorse le estati del 1949 e del 1950 con lui allo Chateau de la Garoupe……….

Aveva pero messo in chiaro fin dall’inizio che non l’avrebbe mai sposata. Aveva un futuro gia tracciato all’interno della Fiat, non era libero di decidere cosa fare della sua vita, e dunque la sua liberta era per lui la cosa piu preziosa.

Liberta di muoversi, di agire, di trascorrere il tempo libero come voleva. L’ultima cosa che desiderava era cambiare stile di vita per legarsi a una partner, e men che meno gli interessava la monogamia; disse a Pamela che lei non era il genere di donna docile che avrebbe tollerato le sue plateali infedelta.

Il comportamento di Gianni rifletteva l’educazione ricevuta………. Nelle classi sociali piu elevate, che si trattasse di aristocratici o della ricca borghesia, il matrimonio era una sorta di contratto piu che un’unione sentimentale. Ci si aspettava che Gianni scegliesse una moglie «adatta» per allevare i figli che sarebbero stati eredi delle loro fortune.

La prescelta avrebbe dovuto appartenere alla sua stessa classe sociale, religione e educazione, preferibilmente con scarse o nulle esperienze sessuali e disposta a tollerare discrete infedelta dopo il matrimonio. Non avrebbe avuto altra scelta, dato che il divorzio sarebbe diventato legale solo nel 1970 e faceva comunque scandalo anche nei Paesi in cui era ammesso. Nella cerchia di Gianni, tutto questo era ritenuto normale e la verginita era un valore sociale: Raimondo Lanza di Trabia e Susanna Agnelli non avevano mai consumato il loro amore.

Gianni dimostro presto nei fatti, piu chiaramente che con qualsiasi parola, di non avere alcuna intenzione di sposare Pamela. La loro relazione era appena all’inizio quando lei resto incinta. L’aborto fu organizzato in una clinica di Losanna, e trascorsero la notte in un hotel della citta. Al mattino, mentre facevano colazione, gli scesero un paio di lacrime di rara emozione. Tuttavia, stando alla biografia di Ogden, quando il giorno dopo si incontro con Pamela nell’hotel Villa d’Este, sul lago di Como, «le racconto della stupenda modella che aveva conquistato la sera precedente».

Ciononostante, la relazione prosegui per altri quattro anni, nel corso dei quali Pamela spero di fargli cambiare idea rendendosi indispensabile. Spese con dovizia i soldi di lui per creargli attorno ambienti eleganti e confortevoli, gli stessi a cui lo aveva abituato la madre Virginia. Ma i due non vivevano sotto lo stesso tetto: Gianni stava a Torino e andava a trovare Pamela a Parigi dove le aveva preso un sontuoso appartamento.

Trascorrevano i mesi estivi a La Garoupe, dove, dopo aver cenato insieme, solitamente anche con un gruppo di amici, Gianni usciva verso mezzanotte. Pamela non si sognava di chiedergli dove andasse e cosa facesse: gioco d’azzardo, o nuove conquiste. Lui tornava intorno alle tre del mattino e spesso si alzava alle sette per uscire in barca a vela.

Convinta di poter far capitolare Gianni dimostrando di essere la compagna perfetta, Pamela arrivo persino a convertirsi al cattolicesimo. Ma dopo quattro anni, la relazione comincio a essere logorata da una tensione irresolubile. Le sorelle di Gianni gli ripetevano da anni che Pamela non era una moglie adatta a lui perche era divorziata; per di piu erano convinte che alla donna interessasse la fortuna degli Agnelli.

Una di loro ricordo che una volta, a Capri, la coppia si era fermata ad ammirare delle sciarpe di seta. Gianni ne aveva comprata una per una sorella e aveva chiesto a Pamela quale le piacesse. «Le prendo tutte» aveva risposto lei. Anche la famiglia di Pamela, peraltro, era contraria al matrimonio, perche i ricordi della guerra e dell’Italia fascista erano ancora recenti.

Nell’inverno 1951, Gianni compro una lussuosa proprieta immobiliare, Villa Leopolda, di ventotto stanze….. Questo acquisto, pero, si rivelo sfortunato: creo ulteriori tensioni tra Pamela, che si considerava la padrona di casa, e le sorelle di Gianni, secondo cui aveva passato il segno. L’anno successivo, i due si separarono.

Il 2 agosto 1952 era una deliziosa notte d’agosto a Beaulieu- sur-Mer. Gianni era a un ballo alla Leonina, la proprieta del finanziere, banchiere e avvocato ungherese Arpad Plesch, che prendeva il nome dai due leoni di pietra all’ingresso di uno dei giardini piu belli della Riviera. Pamela era in vacanza.

Come spesso accadeva, l’interesse di Gianni venne attirato da una giovane donna dai capelli scuri, che indossava un abito da cocktail nero con ricami dorati. Anne-Marie d’Estainville, questo era il suo nome, aveva ventun anni – secondo alcuni racconti, solo diciotto – e apparteneva a una ricca famiglia francese, che possedeva una casa a Cap Martin. Anne-Marie aveva gia conosciuto un altro attraente italiano che come lei quell’estate passava da una festa all’altra, ma Gianni, che aveva la fama del playboy, era decisamente piu interessante. Era curiosa. Chissa se davvero era affascinante come dicevano tutti?

Le basto incrociarne lo sguardo e lui le si avvicino, commentando la splendida vista. La notte d’estate comincio a tessere la propria malia. Dopo gli usuali convenevoli, una frase di Anne-Marie cambio per sempre il corso della serata. «Ho sentito che hai comprato la Leopolda.»

«Sei molto ben informata» replico lui. «E il posto perfetto per stare con gli amici.»

«Mi piacerebbe molto vederla» disse Anne-Marie, guardandolo dritto negli occhi e poi abbassando lo sguardo per non sembrare troppo audace.

Cogliendo al volo l’opportunita, Gianni le propose di andarci subito, e saliti in macchina si allontanarono a gran velocita. Poco dopo erano sulla terrazza, con le luci della baia di Villefranche-sur-Mer che brillavano ai loro piedi. Ma aver portato Anne-Marie alla Lepolda fu il primo degli errori che Gianni commise quella sera.

Gianni pensava che Pamela fosse ancora in vacanza in Normandia con Winston, invece era tornata in Riviera e le era stato detto che Gianni era a Torino. Era uscita tranquillamente a cena con degli amici, ma rientrando, poco dopo mezzanotte, aveva trovato Gianni a letto con la giovane Anne-Marie.

I tradimenti di lui avevano gia da tempo logorato la relazione, ma non aveva mai portato a casa le sue conquiste. Vederlo nel loro letto con un’altra donna la turbo profondamente e Pamela si scaglio contro la giovane. Gianni intervenne e ricevette uno schiaffo in pieno viso. Non si scompose: la cosa piu urgente era riportare a casa Anne-Marie. Disse a Pamela che avrebbero potuto discutere della faccenda al suo ritorno. La donna prese un sonnifero e pianse fino a addormentarsi.

Gianni, che non sembrava turbato, torno alla Leonina con Anne-Marie, per recuperare la borsa che lei aveva scordato nella fretta. Entro in casa a cercarla e quando usci, mezz’ora dopo, era scarmigliato con la cravatta slacciata. Sali sulla station wagon, afferro il volante e premette sull’acceleratore. La macchina usci dal cancello sbandando sulla ghiaia e Anne- Marie si rese conto di essere in pericolo. «Per amor del cielo! Vai troppo veloce!» urlo, inutilmente.

Tempo dopo, Gianni avrebbe ammesso che chiunque sia sveglio dopo le quattro del mattino probabilmente ha bevuto troppo, ma secondo alcune voci non era solo ubriaco, bensi anche sotto l’effetto della cocaina. Qualunque cosa avesse fatto, gli sarebbe costata cara. Pochi secondi dopo aver imboccato la litoranea che portava a Monaco, Anne-Marie grido e si copri gli occhi. Si senti lo stridere dei freni e il suono spaventoso delle lamiere che si accartocciavano.

Alle 4.15 del mattino, mentre usciva dalla curva, Gianni perse il controllo dell’auto e ando a schiantarsi contro il furgone di un macellaio impegnato in una consegna.

Gianni era abbandonato contro il volante, privo di sensi, con una gamba straziata e il sangue che gli scorreva sul viso. Anne-Marie riusci a uscire dall’auto distrutta e fermo una macchina che passava. Per sua fortuna era quella di un altro amico che tornava dalla festa e la accompagno a casa. La giovane scivolo nel letto all’alba e non racconto a nessuno della famiglia cosa fosse accaduto.

Nel cuore della notte, Pamela venne svegliata da una telefonata: Gianni, gravemente ferito, era stato portato all’ospedale di Nizza. Quando arrivo stava entrando in sala operatoria, aveva sangue rappreso sul volto e la mascella e la gamba destra a pezzi. Pamela avviso i medici che, stando alle tracce che aveva visto sul comodino, Gianni aveva assunto cocaina, percio venne operato in anestesia locale.

L’operazione pero non ebbe il successo sperato e Gianni venne trasportato a Firenze, con il capo sul grembo di Pamela per l’intera durata del viaggio. Qui lo operarono di nuovo, rimuovendo tessuti cancrenosi, e suggerirono l’amputazione della gamba. Gianni rifiuto, per il resto della vita avrebbe avuto una leggera zoppia.

A quel punto, anche la sua vita privata si fece complicata. In ospedale, Pamela e le sorelle Agnelli si incontravano spesso ed era chiaro che loro la disapprovavano. D’altra parte, non l’avevano mai ricevuta formalmente, nel corso della sua relazione con il fratello, al contrario della famiglia di lei che lo aveva accolto nella proprieta di Minterne Magna.

Il divorzio di Pamela era divenuto effettivo e non ci sarebbero stati ostacoli a impedire il matrimonio, ma nessuna delle due famiglie era favorevole. Quando Marella rimase incinta, la relazione di Gianni e Pamela si chiuse, anche se continuarono a sentirsi e vedersi dopo il matrimonio. Pamela sapeva a cosa andava incontro Marella.

Se il gradevole Umberto era il classico giovane equilibrato, l’altro fratello, Giorgio, era un problema da anni e andava peggiorando. Aveva gli occhi azzurri e le lentiggini ed era il piu alto di tutti, e somigliava a Virginia, che aveva sempre avuto per lui una particolare tenerezza. La morte della madre, avvenuta quando lui aveva sedici anni, lo aveva profondamente destabilizzato e il giovane faticava a trovare il proprio posto tra i sei vivaci fratelli. Soffriva per le canzonature sferzanti di Gianni, come racconto la ex fidanzata di lunga data, la poetessa Marta Vio.

Nel 1951, Giorgio aveva abbandonato a meta il corso di laurea a Harvard e aveva cominciato una drammatica discesa nella malattia mentale, probabilmente aggravata dalla sperimentazione di droghe psichedeliche. Senza genitori ad aiutarli e consigliarli, i sei fratelli dovettero trovarsi in grosse difficolta in una situazione del genere, soprattutto dopo l’incidente avvenuto verso la fine della relazione di Gianni con Pamela Churchill, quando Giorgio sparo alla donna, mancandola di poco.

Pamela fu rapida a chinarsi e la pallottola ando a conficcarsi nella porta, evitando una tragedia e uno scandalo internazionale.  Gianni e Susanna decisero di far ricoverare il fratello in una struttura psichiatrica in Svizzera, vicino a Rolle, secondo un biografo, quando Giorgio aveva ventiquattro anni, quindi poco dopo il matrimonio di Gianni e Marella.

La famiglia ha sempre preferito non parlare della vita breve e tragica di Giorgio ne della malattia, che sembra essere stata una forma di schizofrenia. Nelle proprie memorie, Susanna parla lungamente di Galeazzo Ciano ma non cita mai il fratello Giorgio.

«Non stava bene. Era ricoverato in una clinica. Era nevrotico, soffriva di un disturbo nervoso. Una volta qualcuno ha detto o scritto che aveva tentato di uccidermi. Non e vero» spiego Gianni nel 1996.

Non e sorprendente, questa rimozione della figura di Giorgio; negli anni Cinquanta la malattia mentale non era ancora stata ampiamente studiata e compresa ed era accompagnata da un fortissimo stigma sociale. Al tempo, le possibilita terapeutiche per il giovane, nel caso fosse stato davvero schizofrenico, avrebbero incluso la psicoterapia e il coma insulinico; fino agli anni Settanta i pazienti venivano ancora sottoposti a procedimenti di lobotomia. I primi antipsicotici vennero messi in commercio negli Stati Uniti negli anni Cinquanta, troppo tardi per aiutare Giorgio.
